You are correct that the subdomain should exist first before installing RT. For the tutorial notes, I have now edited that area about the rt.conf line as you are entirely correct that I didn't have the user cd to the right path before editing the file.
As for the Include line in httpd.conf, I didn't have to uncomment it on mine, so I'm not certain why yours did. It was already there as a regular include without any # at the beginning in my httpd.conf. I'll have to check another one on how it works to see if after trying to distill it whether it uncomments the line or not. Thanks for the kind words
